Job Description

 

   PRIMARY FUNCTIONS 

 

  

 

Academic Advisor: 

 

Responsible for developing individual student academic plans. As a member of the guidance and academic advising staff the academic advisor that will ensure that all students are enrolled in appropriate classes that will lead to completion of school and state required graduation requirements. Cooperates and collaborates with other schools and district staff. 

 

  

 

Student Support Advocate Specialist: 

 

Provide wrap around services, inclusive of providing social services and resources to students, addressing barriers that limit a student from receiving full benefit from their educational experience. Plan after school activities/events to build relationships with the community and to increase student/family engagement.  

 

  

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

 

  

 

Academic Advisor:  

 
     
  1. Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 
  2.  
  3. Bilingual preferred 
  4.  
  5. Possess a valid Class 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by Arizona Department of Public Safety.  
  6.  
  7. Must have strong computer skills, considerable public speaking ability, and effective organizational skills. 
  8.  
  9. Must be willing to participate in school/non-school activities after school, evening, on and off campus, and outside of the regular school year (summer/winter).   
  10.  
 

  

 

Student Support Advocate Specialist:  

 
     
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from an accredited graduate school of social work preferred. 
  2.  
  3. Possession of a valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (Required) 
  4.  
  5. Experience with diverse student population and knowledge of State and Federal guidelines regarding special education and students with disabilities required.  
  6.  
  7. Dependable mode of transportation required upon hire. Must be willing to travel between campuses.   
  8.  
 

SPECIALIZATIONS (Both Academic Advisor/Student Support Advocate Specialist) 

 

A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. 

 

  

 

  

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES  

 

  

 

Academic Advisor:  

 
     
  1. Coordination of Academic Advising activities   
  2.  
       
    1. Facilitation of Academic Advising Meetings 
    2.  
    3. Management of student data for scheduling, and graduation checks.  
    4.  
     
  3. Development, management, delivery of school academic advising process  
  4.  
 

 i. Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders 

 

 ii. Managing of school’s METAS Program 

 

1. Responsible for the following: 

 

a. Recruit and enroll students for college program 

 

b. Meet with college staff for coordination of activities 

 

c. Follow up with students to ensure completion of college processes 

 

d. Monitor student progress 

 

e. Ensure parental and student awareness of college policies and procedures 

 

2. Collect transcripts, grade reports, and other documentation related to the program 

 

3. Perform as the liaison between colleges and the schools 

 

b. Individual Student Planning 

 

 i. Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career, and personal/social skills, goals and plans 

 

 ii. Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data 

 

 iii. Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning 

 

c. System Support 

 

 i. Provides appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school academic advising program. 

 

 ii. Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data 

 

 iii. Coordinates, conducts, and participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills 

 

 iv. Uses available technology resources to enhance the school academic advising program 

 

 v. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school academic advising profession 

 

 vi. Engages in the provision of essential academic services, including: 

 

1. Yearly course schedules 

 

2. Student schedules 

 

3. Progress and final grade reports 

 

4. Maintenance of academic files 

 

5. Administration of state and local assessments 

 

  

 

  

 

Student Support Advocate Specialist: 

 

   

 
     
  1. Obtains developmental/social history to identify previous barriers and/or interventions.  
  2.  
  3. Consults with general and special education personnel regarding impact of behavior, cultural and family dynamics on individual student’s educational progress/needs.  
  4.  
  5. Educates parents/guardians to fully participate in their child’s educational process. 
  6.  
  7. Maintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refers parents and student to agencies when appropriate.  
  8.  
  9. Provides connection between school, family, and community resources.  
  10.  
  11. Helps family access needed services. 
  12.  
  13. Advocate for individual student needs in the educational setting. 
  14.  
  15. Develop and implement after school activities based on student need.  
  16.  
  17. Completes required documentation.  
  18.  
 

  

 

  

 

JOB DEMANDS (Both Academic Advisor/Student Support Advocate Specialist) 

 

Requires vision, hearing, and the ability to speak, write, print, and draw. Work in the job involves sitting and using computer peripherals for extended periods. Other physical activity includes reaching, stooping, bending, holding, grasping and lifting heavy objects. Visual weakness must not prohibit the performing of assigned duties. Verbal communicative ability required.  

 

  

 

CONTINUOUS EDUCATION (Both Academic Advisor/Student Support Advocate Specialist) 

 

Employee will be expected to participate in continuous learning, competency building and maintenance of competency skills.  

 

  

 

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS (Both Academic Advisor/Student Support Advocate Specialist) 

 

Indoor classroom environment and some outdoor activities away from the primary work environment. All weather conditions/temperatures. Contact with the public, employees, children and parents. May have exposure to noise. 

 

  

 

ACCOUNTABILITY (Both Academic Advisor/Student Support Advocate Specialist) 

 

Reports to and is supervised directly by the PRINCIPAL. Employee is also accountable for understanding and complying with CPLC policies and procedures.
