SCOPE OF OPERATION:
The Chief Mechanical Engineer is an individual contributor with influence across the tactical systems engineering organization, which numbers 90 people. Additionally, the Chief Mechanical Engineer will interact across the BMSD engineering organization (700 people). MISSION: The purpose of the Chief Mechanical Engineer is to develop and foster the mechanical engineering discipline and process within the division and ensure that all designs are qualified to meet the systems requirements and the user?s needs. Chief Mechanical Engineer will develop system level mechanical solutions and be able to clearly and concisely convey mechanical design concepts in proposals, and if required, at oral presentations. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: To achieve the mission for this position, the Chief Mechanical Engineer must produce the following critical actions and results: 1. 2. Technical Leadership: Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for Mechanical Engineering in Tactical Systems. a. Oversee mechanical engineering development activity to assure designs are technically sound, and requirements and regulations are met. b. Provide leadership in mechanical engineering problem solving across the section. c. Participate in development of technical strategies and teaming strategies on projects, multiple projects and proposals. Serve as the lead in establishing the mechanical technology and process direction for the mechanical engineering team within Tactical Systems. 3. Customer Response and Support: Provide mechanical engineering expertise in participation on high level technical discussions with customers that will lead to new programs. a. Develop customer intimacy, understanding their needs, and communicating at the appropriate level the varying degrees of technical knowledge. b. Participate in RFI response, proposals and white papers to enhance expression of mechanical engineering technical capabilities to customers. 4. R&D: Participate in customer-funded and internal research & development projects and lead mechanical aspects of some projects, including running small independent R&D for mechanical aspects of programs. 5. Solution Development: Research and analyze data, such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application. Work with customers on current programs and on offering future technical capability to customers, helping to define capabilities that can specifically Skills / Requirements
BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will have the following education, work history, knowledge, and skills. Education: BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent discipline) is required. Advanced technical degree (MS, PhD) is highly desired. Experience, knowledge and skills: 15+ years of demonstrated results as a Mechanical Engineering leader in a DoD ISR environment, with experience designing systems to Military Specifications and Standards. C2, or C4 experience may be considered. Familiar with solids modeling, ASME Y-14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing, and MIL STD 810 testing. Abilities and skills should include application of finite element, shock/vibration, and heat transfer analysis and modeling. Capabilities and skills needed include: ? Demonstrated leadership and management of technical, multidisciplinary teams. ? Demonstrated capability of performing in-depth design reviews and developing alternate solutions that meet the cost, schedule and technical challenges of the program. ? Skilled in communicating design concepts, and approaches in written briefs and presentations. ? Ability to apply expertise in the pursuit and acquisition of new business. ? Actively explores multiple emerging technologies and applies appropriately to solve problems. ? Leads the team by remaining critically objective. Applies depth of knowledge to solutions. ? Application of depth of knowledge in identifying leading edge and breakaway technologies. ? Active identification of high level risks; the risk trade space & mitigation strategies to the team. ? Proactive and responsible in dealing with technical issues; provide a workable range of alternative solutions to issues. Software knowledge/skills should include: Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) Previous experience with one or more of the following applications: CATIA, PRO-E, Unigraphics Configuration Management tools (e.g. TeamCenter) is required.
